Charlotte Friis is a Design Inventor & Conceptualist and founder of Charlotte Friis Design, working across furniture, lighting and spatial communication design. Her practice develops adaptive design systems combining strong aesthetic identity, function, innovation, storytelling, materials and user participation. Central to the work is multi-aesthetic design: enabling one recognisable design to support multiple aesthetic expressions in response to person, place, context and time while retaining a coherent identity. The practice also explores circularity, cultural adaptability and renewal. Her 2026 practice-based framework, “Cross-Cultural Sustainability: A Practice-Based Framework for Adaptive Furniture and Lighting,” investigates how mathematical variation, changeable surfaces, material narrative, user participation and renewal can support cultural adaptation, emotional attachment and continued use while maintaining a coherent design identity. The framework was accepted for the Advanced Design Conference in Como, Italy. Charlotte Friis holds an MA in Communication Design from the Royal College of Art in London and, following her MA, pursued self-initiated, practice-based research in Furniture and Lighting Design at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, centred on the development of her original Storytelling Design concept. Her work has been presented internationally, including at Young V&A, London, and a lighting design forms part of the permanent SaloneSatellite Collection in Milan. In 2024, Charlotte Friis Design was named Home Décor Brand of the Year – Scandinavia by the UK-based Prestige Awards.
